A beautiful Victorian natural sapphire and diamond pendant/brooch, circa late 19th century, designed as an elegant openwork foliate garland.
The jewel centres upon an oval-cut natural blue sapphire, surrounded by old-cut diamonds, with a further smaller sapphire and diamond cluster above. Additional circular-cut sapphires and old-cut diamonds are arranged throughout the scrolling foliate framework, terminating in delicate leaf and pointed motifs.
The diamonds are set predominantly in silver, characteristic of Victorian jewellery of the period, with a gold backing and framework. The reverse retains its original detachable-style brooch fitting together with a pendant suspension loop, allowing the jewel to be worn either as a pendant or brooch.
